Nature Walk

I love birds, I am always looking for them.  This week, I looked out my window and noticed a great deal of activity over at the basil bush in the garden.  I looked longer and spied the bright yellow flash of the American Goldfinch.  We've have mostly boring birds here in the heart of Orange County...the bright yellow goldfinches are an exciting visitor.  Look very closely at the center of the photo and then gaze downwards, you will see a few.

I think the secret to bird-watching with kids, is to call their attention to the interesting visitors they just don't notice.  To my busy kids, the birds fluttering in the gardens just register in their busy brains as "birds" if asked, they would probably guess they are sparrows.  I like to call them over, ask them to watch for a bit and then tell them about what we are seeing. If I am not sure which bird we are looking at, we will go grab a handy bird guide. When I get really stumped, even with the bird guide (sometimes birds all look alike!) then I run over and ask our bird-expert next-door.  (my golden neighbor, whom I  adore)

We have had some beautiful, warm weather lately here in So. California, so we headed to a favorite, wild-ish park near by.  The kids and dog romped, played and explored. I kept a look -out for birds and took photos.

I love this bridge, such scope for childhood imagination :)

Here is a typical view of our river beds, here in So. California.  They are almost always dry.  A big rain storm with a full river bed is an exciting treat.  Just thought I'd share this view with those of you living in other States with freely running water.  The thought of running, bubbling, babbling brooks and rivers makes us a little giddy. ...Something to be dreamed of.

a few of our favorite birding books here at {Home}:

around the house -back to homeschool organization

So, How long does it take an un-organized person to get ready for the new homeschool year?  Umm....Sky snapped this photo of me yesterday.  I am finally boxing up the Sonlight Cores we have used and making room on my shelves for this year's books.  Sadly, there is more in that closet there, but I don't know when I will get to it!

So, instead of organizing, we've had several days of this...

because back -to -homeschool is better served along with back-to-beach-homeschool :)

The beach is so much more empty and pleasant now that everyone else is back to school...We plan to visit as much as possible while the weather is nice.

Emma the Wonder-labradoodle hurt her foot recently.  She wasn't putting weight on it, so a trip to the vet was in order.  They took some x-rays...including this body x-ray.  It was very interesting and nice to know there weren't any way-ward socks or toys inside her...it always made me nervous that she loved my fluffy bed-socks so much!

No breaks, just a badly bruised foot pad.  She is back to her normal self now.

I am excited to jump back into homeschool, having a Monday off was very nice, now I'm ready to hit the street running!

What's new at your place?  How was back to school?

strange pet tricks 2

I took Emma the Wonder-Labradoodle in for a very over-due grooming session.  Known around these parts as her "day of beauty". {whisper} I'm still waiting for my whole "day of beauty"...

When I pick Emma up at the groomers, I am never quite sure what I will be returning with:

Here is the before:  Emma the Wonder-Labradoodle as Labradoodle.

The very first time I arrived to claim this run-way beauty, I was quite stunned...

Unfortunately, we let her grooming session lapse a few months, she was very overdue and had some matted areas. I was a bit taken back to pick this up:

and that friends, is a strange pet trick!

Happy Wordless (or word-ful) Wednesday!!

Thanksgiving firsts

This Thanksgiving holiday included many firsts for our family.  We packed up and drove to Spokane, Washington, to spend time with Sky's brother and his family.  This was our first time driving in snow, and our first time taking Emma-the-wonder-labradoodle with us on a trip.  It was also her very first experience with snow.
She loves, loves, loves snow.  She revels in it.  She dances in it.
life is an adventure
and we have much to be thankful for.
I hope you are all having a wonderful Thanksgiving :)

Clever dog tricks

A funny thing happened the other day, I dropped off our labradoodle for her first ever professional grooming session...

Imagine my shock when I picked
her up, and was handed a
standard poodle!

Under all that fluffy, curly fur was a glam-girl.

Our oldest flat out did not believe it was our Emma. I had to run her through her tricks!

I admit I was a little afraid of what my construction/steel-toe boot-guy was going to say...he actually liked it, he liked how clean and neat she looked.

Spa day for dogs...so when is my day??

Our Labradoodle -head of house security

I gave Sky an ultimatum last Winter.

Surprised?

Sky was surprised, I don't give ultimatums and I'm usually pretty go-with-the-flow around here.

I laid down the law, and told Sky..."a security system or a dog."
(he's not a pet person, so I thought he would pick the security system, but he said "dog").

So now, we have Emma the wonder Labradoodle.

She is practically perfect in every way, which I've said before, here on the blog.

Early Sunday Morning (3 A.M.) we were awoken by a very serious barking doodle. She sleeps in the master bedroom, so yes, we were suddenly very wide awake. (groan)

Let me shorten this and say that we had a series of getting up, checking the house, calming the labradoodle and coaxing her back to her bed. And then we'd do it all over again.

Best way for a dog to freak its person?

Stand in the middle of the house growling at nothing. Just stare. Look at the ceiling. Growl, stare.

I don't believe in ghosts...but a chill ran up my spine!

At 4 A.M. we went through this whole scene yet again, but this time she ran outside barking. So, I had to follow, because the neighbors are friendly and I want to keep it that way.

I expected to find an opossum on the fence, but...nothing.

Then I saw it, a ghostly white opossum face looking down from the patio. Mystery solved.
He was probably walking on our roof the last hour. Meany marsupial.

I said security system or dog.

I got Emma the wonder-labradoodle: *Head of house security.
